PRODUCT OVERVIEW
Commonly known as stinging nettle or common nettle, Urtica dioica is a perennial flowering plant originating from Europe, Asia, Northern Africa, and North America. It is the most recognized member of the Urtica genus. The plant's leaves and stems are covered in both non-stinging hairs and numerous stinging trichomes. When these stinging hairs are touched, their tips detach, transforming the hair into a needle that injects a cocktail of compounds, including acetylcholine, histamine, 5-HT (serotonin), moroidin, leukotrienes, and possibly formic acid. This chemical blend causes the characteristic painful sensation, giving the plant its common name, along with colloquialisms like burn nettle, burn weed, and burn hazel. Historically, this plant has been valued for both its medicinal properties and as a food source.
Upon cooking, stinging nettle offers a flavor profile reminiscent of spinach and cucumber. It is a rich source of essential nutrients such as vitamins A and C, iron, potassium, manganese, and calcium. Indigenous populations in North America traditionally harvested young nettle plants for culinary use, particularly in spring when other food options were scarce. The stinging chemicals can be neutralized by soaking the nettles in water or through cooking, allowing for safe handling and consumption.
